Davis & Elkins College faculty and staff are abuzz with excitement as they welcome students beginning their collegiate journeys or returning to the College campus. This week, the College is hosting an array of activities designed to make both new and returning students feel at home. The journey began on Thursday with check-in for first-year students, while returning students are expected to arrive on Saturday, marking the beginning of D&E’s “Welcome Home: Unlocking Your Potential” orientation theme.

D&E welcomes a diverse and vibrant incoming class equally representative of the “Mountain State”, the United States, and a global population. The College boasts a freshman class representing nearly half of the counties in West Virginia, almost half of the U.S. states, and an impressive one-eighth of the world’s countries. This global representation highlights the College’s commitment to fostering a rich and inclusive community.

“It is absolutely breathtaking, stepping onto such a beautiful campus, this time as a college freshman!” says Women’s Lacrosse member, Avelyn Anderson. “I’m beyond excited to get started with new chapters and possibilities here at Davis & Elkins College!”

In addition to a remarkable incoming class, Davis & Elkins College is celebrating its highest retention rate in nearly a decade. The College’s student body is a testament to its strong community and academic environment, with representation from over 70 percent of West Virginia, 75 percent of the U.S., and nearly a quarter of the countries in the world.

Davis & Elkins College Softball member, Meg Henkle, says, “I’m thrilled to begin this new chapter at D&E, surrounded by an amazing community that truly supports all its students. The warmth and encouragement I’ve already experienced here makes it feel like a true home, and I can’t wait to dive into everything amazing that D&E has to offer. Roll Sens!”

As Welcome Week continues, there are still many events ahead for new and returning students. Highlights include icebreaker events at Augusta Pavilion, bingo night, athletic scrimmages, and welcome-back dance parties at the Icehouse. Opening Worship service occurs on Sunday at 11 a.m. in Robbins Memorial Chapel, led by the College’s new Benfield-Vick Chaplain, Dr. Franklin “Tanner” Capps. Sunday’s festivities conclude with D&E’s Summer Celebration Carnival at Myles Plaza, and Monday’s introduction to classes is accompanied by the Community Fair in the Madden Student Center.

“New and returning students join together with faculty and staff to create the Davis & Elkins community,” comments D&E President Chris A. Wood. “In this unique learning and living environment, horizons are expanded, lifelong friendships are made, and lives are transformed. The beginning of a new academic year is a celebration of opportunity and blessings.”
