James Besten of Bridgeport has been awarded a $10,000 per year scholarship for a total of $40,000 over four years to Davis & Elkins College after participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day. Besten, a 2022 graduate of Notre Dame High School, was selected from a group of the 88 highest achieving high school seniors who are among hundreds of students accepted to attend D&E this fall.
Besten is the son of Brian and Rebecca Besten of Bridgeport. At Notre Dame High School, he was a member of the basketball, cross country, track and field and soccer teams. He served as team captain of Harrison County Bruins Lacrosse Team and was a member of USA Lacrosse. In providing service to his community, Besten is a member of Visiting Shepherds at Bridgeport United Methodist Church and has participated in Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts where he served as assistant senior patrol leader, chaplain’s aide and troop scribe.
At D&E, Besten plans to study nursing.
To be eligible to compete for a Leadership Scholarship, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received. Students vying for the scholarships participated in interviews and submitted an essay of no more than 500 words describing how they envision their future at D&E.
