The Davis & Elkins College Presidential Initiative on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will present a public virtual lecture “Hip Hop: A Culture of Resistance” with Professor Kaba Hiawatha Kamene from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5. Kamene has been a Pan African, African-centered educator, consultant, administrator, staff developer and curriculum writer for over 40 years.

In his lecture, Kamene will discuss the history of Hip Hop as it began in Bronx, New York, in the Black and Latino community to become an instrument of dynamic social change among youth and a global influence. Hip Hop is a culture giving voice about the lived experiences in society through rap music, deejaying, graffiti art, breakin’, fashion and language.
Kamene’s voice, speeches, writings and narrations have been performed in independent productions, including “Om” by Nehru and Doom. He is also the featured writer and performer on Wu Tang Clan’s EP, “The Saga Continues” track titled “Message” and collaborated with Kaashe Muzik on his own two EPs titled, “From Kaos to Order” and “Mi aMoor.”
Kamene holds a Master of Arts in world history, a Master of Science in educational administration and supervision and a bachelor’s degree in international politics. He taught every grade level in the New York City Department of Education and worked as a college professor in the Black Studies department at the State University of New York at New Paltz.
