Davis & Elkins College Class of 2022 alumnus Alessandro Trujillo has been awarded the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award (Sullivan Award) upon graduation. The award is typically granted to a graduating senior who displays qualities of service above self and maintains a positive impact in their respective community through integrity and compassion.

Trujillo, recipient of a Bachelor of Arts in History and minors in Religious Studies and Foundations of Education, completed 167 hours of service to his community. Multiple organizations within the community were positively impacted by Trujillo’s service, including RAYS club, Elkins High School, Elkins City Hall, Elkins-Randolph County Chamber of Commerce, Rise Against Hunger and Mountain State Forest Festival (MSFF). He served as coach, timekeeper, clean-up crew and staff member within these organizations.

Outside of community service, Trujillo exemplified true Sullivan Award qualities as a captain of the Davis & Elkins College Men’s Swim Team and as Secretary of the Delta Alpha Phi International Honor Society. He has fulfilled roles of Substitute Teaching Assistant and Special Education Assistant for students with disabilities. Trujillo has also been a part-time Water Safety Swim Instructor at Prince William County Parks & Recreation, where he teaches swimming competency and designs lesson plans for elementary school students.

“While all our swim team members are involved in community engagement, Alessandro has always had a heart for service and helping others,” says Head Men’s and Women’s Swim Coach, Nikki Rose. “In his time at D&E, he always led the way for lending a hand and being involved with any events taking place for our swim community. I am so proud that he continues to serve so many in his home community as well!”

The Sullivan Award has been presented on behalf of the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation since 1890 to more than 70 universities across the United States. The Award, along with the Mary Mildred Sullivan Award, combine as the only national collegiate service awards and are considered among the most prestigious awards available to students
